Mysuru Palace Lighting

The palace lighting takes place on every Sunday and other national or government holidays between 7.00 PM to 8.00 PM

There are about a lakh incandescent lamps that lights up this historical structure. During Dasara, the palace illumination is done for a complete 2 hours late in the evening at around 7.00 PM to 9.00 PM throughout the nine days of festivities.

Visitors will need many eyes to enjoy the sight of the whole city.

There is no entrance ticket/fee to watch the palace illumination. Just walk in through the palace gates and enjoy the beauty at the palace grounds.

Torchlight Parade in Mysuru

The Dasara celebrations culminate on the night of Vijayadashami with the Panjina Kavayatthu (torchlight parade) held at Bannimantap. The Maharaja, dressed in his riding clothes, makes an entry on horseback to the parade grounds. He is saluted by his military units. Lights would be lit up to welcome the Maharaja and his military officials. Only military units participate in this organized parade.

The original purpose of the parade was to instil confidence in the people and to showcase the military capability of the ruling king. Now the whole occasion showcases the grandeur and majesty of the erstwhile rulers and offers the people a glimpse into the history of the state.

The parade also includes an equestrian show and a feat of acrobatics on motorbikes. The much lauded programme of the day is the laser show organized on the parade grounds. The entire parade comes to an end with the playing of the national anthem of the erstwhile Mysore state by the military band.

Dasara Jumbu Savari (Elephant procession)

The Jambu Savari or the Elephant procession is one of the most prominent events of this festival. During this procession, 12 trained elephants adorned with colourful attire are taken around the streets. One of them carries Chamundeshwari’s idol atop a golden mandap. The procession starts from the Mysore Palace to Bannimantap. Performances like traditional dances, musicals, and displays of swordsmanship can be witnessed throughout the procession – indeed a sight to behold. As it travels through the city streets, it spreads zeal and joy throughout the city.

The Dasara procession begins at the Palace with uniformed soldiers, horses, caparisoned elephants, dancers and floats accompanied by brass bands playing evocative Indian melodies. The Palace Guard and Mysore Lancers march by as graceful folk-dancers twirl and swirl between the floats. The majestic Elephant adorned by golden anklets, bells and chains carries the city’s Patron Goddess Chamundeshwari in a bowdab. This extravagant celebration comes to an end with a torchlight parade by the State Police, as fireworks light up the night sky.

The conclusion of the Dasara celebrations is marked by a colorful Dasara procession, popularly known as Jamboo Savari. The grandeur and magnificence of this event have popularized the Mysore Dasara world over. The main attraction of the Dasara procession is the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari which is carried in a golden howdah weighing over 750 kg on top of an elephant. Pre-independence, the practice was that the king himself would lead the procession seated upon Golden howdah on the royal elephant’s back.
