Boating at Karanji Lake

The boating point is located at less than halfway through the park. You can choose between hiring a pedal boat or a boat with boatman to row for you. The boat takes you to round trips around the bushy islands in the Karanji lake.

You can purchase your ticket for boating from the counter near the entry of boating point. The price of the ticket is around INR 25 per head for a 20-minute ride. The boating is quite enjoyable and refreshing.

ABOUT

Located on Nanjanagud Road is the Avadhoota Datta Peetham Ashram with high walls and constant buzz of devotees throughout the day. However, in one corner of the Ashram and usually deserted is the bonsai garden. Over three decades in development, the garden is touted to be the biggest bonsai garden in the country. On display are over 250 bonsai specimen collected from all over the world as well as grown and nurtured at the site. They are placed in an oriental garden setting with pebbled paths and tiny water bodies. The garden has some rare varieties of casuarinas and some marine bonsai. It is said to have been designed with various aspects in mind including zodiac signs, stars, notes in Indian music and Indian sages.

The Shuka Vana opens in the morning at 10 AM to 12.30PM, later it is closed for a few durations. Again Shuka Vana is open from 3.30PM to 5.30PM.
The Shuka Vana is closed on Wednesday, open on all other days of the week.
One can get yourself photographed with exotic birds for a fee of Rs. 200 per bird

Tips

Visiting Shuka Vana on weekdays is preferable as there will be a lot of crowd on weekends.
Mobile phones and Photography are not allowed inside the aviary. This is a different room for feeding the birds and to take photographs with them at a fixed price. It is reported that for official photography it costs 150-200 rupees.*
Also, there is an option to get photographed with exotic birds at Rs.200 per bird.*
While you exit the place, you also find a shopping area where you shop.

Mysuru Rail Museum

The Mysore Rail Museum was setup in 1979 as the first regional rail museum with an aim to preserve few relics from the era of steam transportation.

Fast forward to 2019-20. The museum has been completely redesigned and refurbished. Museum remained closed for a year during which works were planned and executed in a strict timeline and to high standards. Reconceptualized and renovated rail museum was opened on 14th March 2020. Expanding the geographical reach it is now spread over three acres, the revitalized museum aims at setting a new qualitative benchmark not only in terms of exhibit display and design but also in the matter of variety of its collection and re-imagined landscape. It tells the story of the evolution of Indian Railways by creating a captivating and experiential atmosphere, complementing heritage locomotives and carriages with contemporary art, multimedia, video, and sound.

The galleries in different sections are added and connected visually and spatially by the pathways. A vintage gabled style iconic wayside railway station creates the nostalgia of the bygone era. One can go in for a serious info-gaze into the exhibits, learning about rail-related trivia, or enjoy the ride on toy train which chugs along a circular track, complete with level crossing and a green tunnel. The visitors can explore a section and return to the central plaza for a fresh view from watchtower or stop by for a casual read and coffee or take a peek into the rail coach restaurant.

The museum creates visually stunning spectacles with some outstanding railway behemoths in the background which have been restored painstakingly. It attempts to kindle your interests in the nuances of the Railway world. Souvenir shop offers wide variety of mementos.

St.Philomena’s Church Mysuru

One of the largest cathedrals in India, St. Philomena’s Cathedral in Mysuru is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. The majestic church, built to honour the memory of Saint Philomena, a Latin Catholic Saint of the Roman Catholic Church, draws inspiration from the beautiful Cologne Cathedral of Germany. Remains of St Philomena are preserved at the cathedral. St. Philomena’s Cathedral is one of the tallest churches in Asia.

St Philomena’s Cathedral was built by Maharaja of Mysuru Mummudi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in 1843 in memory of 4th-century saint and martyr St. Philomena. The cathedral was built as a gift to a large number of European populations residing in Mysuru in the 19th century. As the need for a larger church was felt due to the growing population of Europeans, the foundation for the new church was laid in October 1933 by the then king of Mysuru, Krishnarajendra Wodeyar.

St Philomena’s Cathedral was designed by a French architect, Daly, to resemble Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Church Timings

You can visit the church till 6 in evening as the timings of St. Philomena’s Church are from 05.00 am to 06.00 pm. It is always better to visit in evening as then you can watch the church is being illuminated. Every Sunday and on festival, special masses are organised while everyday masses are conducted in morning and evenings. On 11th August, annual feast is organised at the church.Photography is not allowed inside the church hall.

Brindavan Gardens of Mysore is undeniably one of the best terrace gardens in the world.

Spread across an area of 60 acres, Brindavan Gardens is at the bottom of the Krishnaraja Sagara Dam (KRS), across the river Cauvery. Modelled on the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir, the garden entices visitors with its lush green lawns, terraces, flower beds, topiary and multihued fountains. Today, the Brindavan Gardens is world-famous for its ethereal beauty and grandeur. An endless expanse of green, dotted with colourful blooms, the terraced gardens are well laid and admired for their symmetrical design. The highlight for visitors, however, is the famed musical fountain which is a water ballet of sorts, with lights and music and is played every evening for the tourists.

Krishnaraja Sagara Dam (KRS): The engineers and planners of the erstwhile Mysuru State had envisioned this dam, with many objectives in mind like providing drinking water to Mysuru/ adjacent places, to supply water to the hydro-electric power station at Shivasamudra and for a continuous supply of Cauvery water for irrigational purposes. Due to the hard work and expertise of great visionaries like Bharat Ratna Sir M. Vishweshwaraya, T Ananda Rao, Sir Mirza Ismail and other engineers. the dam work was completed between 1911-1932. The dam is 8600 feet in length and 130 feet in height.

Sri Chamundeshwari Temple – Chamundi Hills

Sri Chamundeshwari Temple is about 13 kms from Mysuru, which is a prominent city in Karnataka State, India. Sri Chamundeshwari Temples is famous not only in India but also abroad. Atop of the hill the famous Sri Chamundeswari Temple. ‘Chamundi’ or ‘Durga’ is the fierce form of ‘Shakti’. She is the slayer of demons, ‘Chanda’ and ‘Munda’ and also ‘Mahishasura’, the buffalow-headed monster.

She is the tutelary deity of the Mysuru Maharajas and the presiding deity of Mysuru. For several centuries they have held the Goddess, Chamundeswari, in great reverence.

‘Skanda Purana’ and other ancient texts mention a sacred place called ‘Trimuta Kshetra’ surrounded by eight hills. Lying on the western side is the Sri Chamundeshwari Temples, one among the eight hills. In the earlier days, the Hill was identified as ‘Mahabaladri’ in honour of God Shiva who resides in the ‘Mahabaleswara Temple’. This is the oldest temple on the hills.

In the later days, the hill came to be known as ‘Sri Chamundeshwari Temples’ in honour of the Goddess Chamundi, the chief subject of the ‘Devi Mahathme’. The Goddess is believed to be an incarnation of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. A large number of devotees from all over the country and from abroad visit the temple every year. They believe that the Goddess fulfills their desires and aspirations.

Sri Chamundeshwari Temples rises to a height of 3,489 feet MSL and is visible from a distance itself while traveling towards Mysuru. There is a good motorable road to the top. Besides from Mysuru side, there is also a motorable road from its rear side, the Nanjangud side. Bus facilities are available to visit the hills. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates regular bus services every day for the convenience of pilgrims and others.

A temple of great antiquity with over 1,000 years of background, it was a small shrine initially and assuming importance over the centuries it became a big temple as seen today. It assumed significance after the Mysuru Maharajas, the Wodeyars, came to power in 1399 A.D., great devotees and worshippers of the Devi, Chamundeswari became their home deity and thus assumed religious prominance.

Chamundeshwari Temple: Said to have been 1000+ years old, Chamundeshwari Temple featuring Goddess Durga received patronage from all rulers such as Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire and Mysuru Wodeyars. The temple tower (Raja Gopura) was added by Krishna Raja Wodeyar III in 1830.
Mahishasura Statue: Mahishasura statue, holding a snake and a sword welcomes visitors to Chamundi Hills. This scary looking demon was killed by Goddess Durga, to bring relief to the people. Goddess Durga is also referred to as Mahishasura Mardini (Goddess who assassinated Mahishasura)
Nandi Statue: On the way to Chamundi Hill visitors can see a large monolithic statue of Nandi, 15 ft in height, 25 ft in width complete with extensive ornaments around the neck, one of the biggest of its kind. Nandi statue is white in colour but often appears black due to oil deposits.
